The situation in Gaza is appalling. Every day brings new reports, each more harrowing than the last. The level of loss and suffering is indescribable.

The UK has now officially recognised the state of Palestine. This historic decision, taken alongside some of our closest allies, reflects our unwavering commitment to a two-state solution and affirms the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.

This decision is not a reward for Hamas. The plight of the hostages still captured in Gaza remains at the forefront of all our minds, and the Prime Minister will keep supporting every effort to bring home British-linked hostages. However, Hamas are not the Palestinian people. The Palestinian people have an inalienable right to self-determination, and to live their lives in peace, free from violence and suffering.

There is nothing that could ever justify what we are witnessing. The Israeli government’s actions have created an entirely preventable and utterly horrifying famine. The ongoing refusal to allow sufficient aid into Gaza means this atrocity is only worsening.

The UK government has provided nearly a quarter of a billion in support to the Palestinian territories last year and this; it has announced a further £15m of support to respond to the situation in Gaza and is undertaking air drops of supplies and packages to bolster medical care.

However, while the Israeli government continues to deny aid to Gaza any support we give will only ever be a drop in the ocean. All restrictions on aid must be permanently removed and provision of immediate and unimpeded humanitarian assistance enabled.

Recognition of a Palestinian state is not enough. The UK Government is building consensus with leaders in the region around our Framework for Peace – steps that can take us from a ceasefire to a permanent end to the conflict. However, this is a clear message that there can be a better future.
